Essential Items to Pack for Your Next Cruise: A Mom’s Guide
Cruise vacations are an exciting way to explore new destinations while enjoying the convenience of unpacking just once. However, packing for a cruise can be a bit of an art form—especially for moms like me who want to ensure a smooth and enjoyable experience for the entire family. Over the years, I’ve fine-tuned my cruise packing list to include items that make life on board easier, more organized, and less stressful. Here are my tried-and-true essentials for your next cruise adventure. Please note as an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. 1. Magnetic Accessories for Doors and Walls
Did you know that most cruise ship doors and walls are magnetic? This fun fact has inspired a couple of my favorite cruise hacks.
Magnetic Door Decorations: We always decorate our cabin door with colorful magnets. Not only does it add a touch of personality, but it also makes our room easy to spot in a long hallway of identical doors—especially for kids who may run ahead. I make mine but you can buy them on amazon or Etsy for a reasonable price.
Magnetic Hooks: Inside the stateroom, I pack heavy-duty magnetic hooks to hang lanyards, hats, jackets, and even lightweight travel bags. Space is at a premium in cruise cabins, and these hooks help keep everything off the floor and within reach. Get ones that can hold at least
2. Highlighters for the Daily Navigator
Cruise ships typically provide a daily schedule of activities (often called the “Navigator” on Disney ships). While some cruise lines have switched to app-based schedules, many still offer a paper version. I pack a set of highlighters in different colors so each family member can mark the activities they’re interested in. It’s an easy way to stay organized and ensure you don’t miss out on your must-dos, from character meet-and-greets to trivia games and shows. Also, throw in some retractable Sharpies. These are awesome to have if you are on a Disney Cruise and want the character signatures. The retractable ones are the best as it is easier to use than the ones with caps.
3. Laundry Essentials
Laundry services on cruises can be pricey, but many ships offer self-serve laundry facilities. Here’s what I bring to make laundry day a breeze:
Laundry Detergent Sheets: These are lightweight, mess-free, and TSA-approved since they don’t count as liquids.
Pop-Up Hamper: This foldable hamper is perfect for keeping dirty clothes organized and easy to carry to the laundry room.
On the Disney Cruise ships, it costs $3 to wash and $3 to dry per load.
4. Universal Travel Adapter
Outlets in cruise cabins are often limited, and some may not accommodate U.S.-style plugs. A universal travel charger with multiple USB ports ensures that all your devices—phones, tablets, cameras, and white noise machines—stay charged without a fuss. I like this one as it has 3 USB-C ports and 2 regular USB ports.
5. White Noise Machine and Mini Humidifier
Cruise cabins can be noisy, whether it’s from hallway traffic or engine vibrations. A white noise machine helps drown out the sound, ensuring everyone sleeps soundly.
The air on board can also be dry, so I bring a mini portable humidifier to add a bit of moisture to the room—especially helpful for kids prone to dry skin or stuffy noses.
6. Lanyards for Key Cards
Most cruise lines use key cards to access rooms, make purchases, and check in for activities. A lanyard keeps the card secure and accessible, especially for kids. If the cruise line doesn’t provide one, I make sure to pack our own.
7. Luggage Tag Holders
Some cruise lines, like Norwegian, require you to print your own luggage tags at home. I pack plastic luggage tag holders that fit these paper tags perfectly, protecting them from getting torn or wet during embarkation.
8. Carry-On Bag Essentials
Checked luggage might not arrive at your stateroom until the evening, so I always pack a well-stocked carry-on. My must-haves include:
Swimsuits: So the kids can hit the pool or waterslide right away.
Toiletries: Travel-sized versions of our essentials, including toothbrushes and toothpaste.
Sunscreen: For any outdoor activities, like the pool.
Medications: Always keep these in your carry-on, just in case.
Change of Clothes: A fresh outfit for everyone, especially useful if there are delays with luggage delivery.
Packing cubes: These are a game changer for allowing me to unpack quickly and keeping everything inside my luggage organized.
I prefer to pack all of this in a backpack or a small rolling suitcase for ease of use.
Other Handy Items to Consider
Refillable Water Bottles: Staying hydrated is key, and many ships have refill stations for water and juice. I love my Hydroflask and take it everywhere with me. I also like this water bottle by Larq that has a UV purifier attached to it and this particular one also tracks my hydration level.
Snorkel Gear: If you plan to swim at ports, having your own gear saves rental fees and ensures a perfect fit.
Portable Fan: Great for warm climates or stuffy cabins.
Ziplock Bags: For wet swimsuits, snacks, or keeping small items organized.
An old hotel key card: Some cruise ships staterooms won’t turn on unless there is a card in the key card slot. I usually bring an old hotel key or a used gift card (as they are the same size as my key card for the ship) and put it in this slot so the lights, charging station etc. will stay on.
Anti-nausea medications: Sometimes you may hit rough seas. So, I usually bring sea-bands, meclizine, and ginger chews with me, in case we hit a rough patch. Green apples may also help with sea-sickness, as well as choosing a cabin that is mid-ship and at a lower level.
Dollar bills: To tip the porters at the port that take your luggage from you and also for room service.
My cell phone with the app downloaded on it before arriving at the port: Once the ship leaves the port, I put my phone on airplane mode and connect to the ship’s wifi. Some cruiselines, like Disney, will have a free text messaging service if you are connected to the ship’s wifi so your party on the cruise can message each other. And the app usually has the daily itinerary and allows you to check your charges, instead of going to guest services.
